How to Choose a Multivitamin: Gummies, Capsules, or Tablets?

Walk down any supplement aisle and you'll find dozens of multivitamins that all promise the same thing. The real differences come down to format, formula, and who it's designed for. Here's a simple way to cut through it.

Start with the format you'll actually take. The best multivitamin is the one you remember to take every day. Gummies are easy and pleasant, which helps consistency, but they usually contain fewer nutrients per serving and some added sugar. Capsules and tablets tend to pack in more vitamins and minerals, at the cost of being larger to swallow. Softgels sit in the middle and are often easier to absorb.

Match the formula to your life stage. Men's and women's formulas differ mainly in iron, which women of childbearing age often need more of and which most men need less of. Formulas made for 40+, 50+, or prenatal use adjust nutrients like B12, vitamin D, calcium, and folate for those needs. If you're pregnant or planning to be, choose a prenatal formula.

Check the label, not just the front of the bottle. Look at the serving size (some gummies need two or three to reach the listed amounts), the form of key nutrients such as methylfolate or methylcobalamin, and whether the brand uses third-party testing. Higher numbers aren't automatically better, since more than 100% of some nutrients isn't necessarily useful.

Think of it as a backup, not a substitute. A multivitamin fills gaps on days when food falls short. It doesn't replace a balanced diet. If you have a health condition or take medication, check with your doctor or pharmacist before starting anything new.
